NOW AVAILABLE - Fit SUBARU front & rear disc brakes to your VW type 1 or type 3 car

Subaru disc brakes can now be fitted to your TYPE 1 VW car - This means Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Type 3, Split window bus.

Subaru brake setups have been produced in many different variations from 1990 to 2008 but all Subaru disc brake setups from these years can be used for Subabrakes.

Rear Brakes.

The rear disc brake setup consists of :

(1) Subaru backing plate which holds the caliper and emergency brake assembly,

(2) a drive hub,

(3) a floating disc hat

(4) a brake caliper.

Assembled on the rear trailing arm it looks like this (WRX 5 x 100 shown) :

Subaru made many variations of it's rear brakes, all centred around the same basic design. This can be grouped into two basic types :

(1) Early stepped rear discs (generally 1990-2003 (Generation 1,2,3) plus WRX all years). These have a 170mm rear emergency brake drum size. The backing plates for these are generally a simple circle with four holes that require redrilling with the supplied drill template. The stepped rear discs shown only allow for 5 x 100 Subaru PCD to be used, in conjunction with the Subahub. In order to use larger PCD's, order the Subahub MULTI and replace the stepped discs with the generation 4 non-stepped discs (with 170mm drum size - DBA 2661e).

(2) Late non-stepped rear discs. (generally 2004-2008 (Generation 4)). These also have a 170mm rear emergency brake drum size. This setup allows the use of virtually any wheel PCD with the Subahub MULTI. The backing plates for these are generally a circle with an "amoeba" shape that requires redrilling, plus a concentric ring and amoeba plate to create a perfect fit on the trailing arm. Discs are in various outer diameters depending on their matched calipers.

Note : Generation 5 Subaru (generally 2009 onwards) changed to a caliper-on-strut design and 190mm emergency brake. These are not compatible with Subabrakes as the backing plates no longer include caliper mounts.

All installations of Subabrakes rear brake kits will result in an additional 10mm track width per side for a total of 20mm track width increase. Most regions will allow up to 25mm in track width without engineering however it is up to you to check with your relevant authority to see if you are operating within the law. Using Subaru wheels with the Subabrakes setup will clear the rear trailing arm.

What you need from your donor Subaru :

1) Rear backing plate assembly including handbrake shoes.

2) Matching disc hat

3) Matching caliper, pads and caliper bolts

4) Handbrake cable inner and outer, including clip.

Assembly instructions for rear brakes on Type 1 :

1. Remove the split pin, castellated nut, rear drum, 4 x retaining bolts for bearing cap, bearing cap and VW backing plate with brake shoes :

2. Bolt the provided drill template to the Subaru backing plate with the 4 bolts provided. Drill the 4 x VW bolt holes into the Subaru backing plate so that it can be bolted to the VW trailing arm. Bolt your Subaru disk hat to your Subarugears hub and drill your desired PCD for wheel studs through both the hub and disk hat. Unbolt and install your selected wheel studs.

3. Place the Subaru backing plate onto the VW trailing arm in place of the previous VW backing plate. Depending on your style of Subaru backing plate and Subarugears kit, you may also need to use the provided concentric ring to locate the Subaru backing plate to the VW trailing arm properly and the 'Amoeba' within the Subaru backing plate to provide a flat surfacefor the bearing retainer :

4. Install the supplied bearing retainer cap (it is different to the VW one you removed to account for the thicker Subaru backing plate) and install the Subaru handbrake shoes, springs and levers :

5. Install the Subarugears splined hub and previously removed castellated nut. Torque to specification and install split pin :

6. Place the Subaru disk hat over the hub and locate on studs and centre lug. Bolt caliper to the Subaru backing palte, ensuring bleed nipples are at the top of the calipers :

7. Bleed brakes and cut Subaru outer handbrake cable sheath to the same length as VW sheath (trailing arm to back of tunnel). Insert Subaru handbrake inner cable into backing plate lever and run into sheath, up through tunnel and out in front of handbrake lever where your existing VW handbrake cables were located. Fit to VW handbrake lever using supplied locking ferrules.
